Death Race Wiki

Frankenstein is the pseudonym given to certain drivers in the Death Race.

History[]

Death Race 2000[]

Frankenstein is a character created by the regime to ensure no one wins the race; he is the most famous driver. According to official propaganda, he is a near-immortal warrior, repeatedly rebuilt with mechanical parts after surviving numerous accidents, earning him the nickname "the man who cannot die."

The current Frankenstein (who has no name) competes in the 2000 edition, piloting his alligator car and accompanied by his new co-driver, Annie Smith, who is actually a resistance infiltrator sent to kidnap him. However, they end up joining forces when they realize they share the same objective, as Frankenstein's goal is not to win the race; his true objective is to reach the finish line and assassinate "Mr. President."

After surviving the race, Frankenstein reaches the finish line and assassinates the President, fulfilling his mission. Finally, he assumes leadership of the country and promises to establish a new order free of violence and manipulation.

Death Race 2050[]

Frankenstein is a hybrid of man and machine, the star driver of the Death Race in the new century, organized by the UCA. In the year 2050, during the competition, Frankenstein is accompanied by his co-driver Annie Sullivan, a spy sent by the rebellion to kill him. However, as the race progresses, they decide to rebel against their own teams.

After eliminating the leader of the rebellion, Frankenstein assassinates the President on live television, exposing the system's sham to the world and symbolizing the collapse of the spectacle that had kept humanity oppressed. He tells people that they do not need a race to unleash their violence, indirectly turning the world into a battlefield. In the end, we see Frankenstein planning to escape with Annie and her mangy dog to the "garbage island" to live in peace.

Death Race 2[]

Frankenstein was a creation of September Jones, the mother of the Death Race. To attract more audiences, she created a disfigured and mysterious car racer, selling his image and merchandizing even before he actually existed. To fill the vacancy, she blackmailed Carl "Luke" Lucas, a formidable racer whose body was damaged from his car's fire during the first Death Race. He refused to play her game, but as she threatened his friends, he reluctantly accepted. However, when Frankenstein's first race began, he made her pay for her threats by running her over, killing Jones instantly, before returning to the race.

Death Race 3: Inferno[]

Carl "Luke" Lucas remained as Frankenstein after the second race, winning a total of four times, all on Terminal Island. Initially, he remained disfigured, but as his wounds became infected, R. H. Weyland paid for the surgery to restore him to his normal self, erasing all of his scars. Weyland intended to free him after he won his fifth race, but as he lost the Weyland Corporation to Niles York, he was unable to keep his promise. After that, Lucas intended to abandon the role of Frankenstein, but York forced him to remain in it, threatening his friends and his team. York, however, realized his mistake too late when Lucas rammed into his study, apparently killing him.

At the end of this third film, it is revealed that Lucas and his team, instead, had escaped, leaving behind a severely disfigured York, who is forced to take over the Frankenstein role with an American accent. It is also believed that it is York who is killed at the beginning of Death Race.

Death Race[]

The second Frankenstein, implied to be York, killed at least another racer and almost won his fifth and final race, but his car's defenses were sabotaged by his co-pilot, and despite throwing his Tombstone upon his last pursuer, his car was blown out by a missile from Machine Gun Joe precisely when he was reaching the finish line and his freedom. Incredibly, despite the fact his car was fully on fire, he survived, but the doctors' attempt to save him failed, and he died on the operating room table soon after the race. However, Claire Hennessey kept his death a secret, pretending he was only heavily wounded.

After Frankenstein's death, the Death Race's audience and benefits fell, so Hennessey began searching for a replacement. After choosing the former race pilot Jensen Ames, she organized his wife's murder, using the recluse Slovo Pachenko to commit the crime and framing Ames for it. After being sent to Terminal Island, he became Frankenstein six months after the previous one's death.

Characteristics[]

All of the Frankensteins, at least on Terminal Island, followed several rules: they were kept in isolation, separated from all of the other prisoners, and all of them wore the same clothes, metal mask and skull ring. No Frankenstein spoke to anyone except his co-pilot, in order to keep the mystery going.
